Climate Change and its impact in Thailand: A short overview on actual and potential impacts of the changing climate in Southeast Asia

  • Climate change
  • Drought
  • Floods

In 2011, Thailand was underwater: more than one million people were affected by severe flooding for several weeks as a result of persistent rainfall (World Bank, 2011). In 2015-16 Thailand has been experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades, leading to critically low levels of water reservoirs countrywide (NHC, 2016). Even though future climate change scenarios are still being debated, it is likely that Thailand will be disproportionately affected by the consequences of climate change. This TransRe factsheet No. 2 provides an overview of a) past climate trends, b) future climate scenarios, and c) its expected impacts.
